What I’m trying to get across is that ABA does not create mental health problems, bad ABA therapists do. There is also research out there against cognitive behavioral therapy and other mental health interventions. Does that mean that no one should ever see a therapist to help them manage their mental health? No. It takes the right combination of resources to support people if they need help. I don’t doubt that there are some ABA therapists that have abused the science, but some of us out there are NOT using the science to force children to comply. We’d much rather change the environment and make it more accommodating not just to individuals with autism but everyone. In complicated situations, I teach college students with autism to advocate for themselves in college, the workplace and beyond. But breaking down the steps of complicated social situations can help individuals with autism advocate for themselves with confidence.
