Why I Enjoy Teaching Math Despite Not Being "A Math Person…"

The school year has begun. Thus I've started year four at my current school and year eleven of my teaching career. I teach second-grade classes at a private school, so I teach everything in theory… Well, until my former co-worker came up with the idea for us to departmentalize at the elementary level. She wanted to teach reading and language arts. So that left me teaching math and social studies… and I said "yes!" eagerly and enthusiastically because I love teaching social studies and math. I was a math and science teacher at my previous special education placements.

My fervor for social studies is easy to pinpoint. Social Studies was always my favorite subject. I enjoyed learning about history; I remember when I memorized Patrick Henry's "Give me Liberty, or Give Me Death" speech and wrote and directed a group play about the American Revolution. World History, American History, information about cultures, government… everything. I soaked in every obscure detail like a sponge. Today I spend a significant chunk of my time researching and learning historical dance and theater in the Society for Creative Anachronism.

And I love teaching math, yes… math. If you don't know me, you're probably thinking, "So, you teach math because you are passionate and love it too?" No, my story is quite the opposite. I've spent much of…
